- mns

Anwar attacks Royal Commissions "procedural decisions"
ImageKUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 (ES) - Former deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has come out in the open by issuing a statement attacking the "procedural decisions" of a Royal Commission formed to investigate allegations of judicial fixing.

"While the creation of the Royal Commission gave Malaysian public some hope that the credibility and integrity of the Judiciary might be restored, we are unimpressed with the proceedings and the procedural decisions made by the Commissioners thus far," he said.

Anwar who is also de facto leader of opposition National Justice Party (KeADILan) said the Royal Commission must operate with the "highest level of integrity and transparency" so as not to be seen as "feeding the rot which has tarnished the Malaysian Courts".

In a statement posted on his blog today, Anwar also referred to the released third segment of the video clip recording which allegedly implicated lawyer VK Lingam further on his role in judicial appointment.

Lingam had testified in front of the Commission and had neither denied nor confirmed that he was the person featured in an earlier related clip.

Anwar said the third segment of the video clip which was given to him on Jan 25, "adduces additional evidence that the conspiracy currently being investigated by the Royal Commission extends beyond the attempt to fix the appointment of (former chief Justice Tun) Ahmed Fairuz to the Federal Court".

Commission rejects Anwar testimony
Anwar said the new 5-minute segment directly implicates former Chief Justice Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah who was alleged to have received bribes from Lingam and another corporate figure so that he couldn't "attack" those two individuals publicly.

Dzaiddin Abdullah was the Chief Justice of Malaysia from December 2000 until 2003.

According to the transcript of the clip, a man featured in the grainy recording was quoted as saying: "And we have given him the most expensive gift. Don't ask about it lah. I have given him.."

In a related development the Commission today reportedly decided not to call in Anwar as a witness.

Two other PKR leaders - R Sivarasa and Sim Tze Tsin - have also been told that they would not be needed to testify.

Similarly two secret witnesses offered by Anwar will also not be called in to testify.

Commission chairman Tan Sri Haidar Mohd Noor said that the evidence to be given by these witnesses are not directly linked to the inquiry. - Saadon Aksah/ES
